Gustar Explained Clearly: How to Express Likes in Spanish

Stop trying to translate 'I like' directly. Learn the actual mechanics of the verb gustar and how to use it naturally.

Gustar Explained Clearly: How to Express Likes

If you try to translate “I like the book” directly word-for-word into Spanish, you will say “Yo gusto el libro.” This is incorrect, and a native speaker might not understand you.

To use gustar correctly, you have to change how you think about expressing likes.

Gustar does NOT mean “to like”

In English, we say “I like the book.” The subject is I, the verb is like, and the object is the book.

In Spanish, gustar actually means “to be pleasing to”.

So, instead of saying “I like the book,” Spanish speakers say: “The book is pleasing to me.”

  • Me gusta el libro.
  • (To me) (is pleasing) (the book).

The Two Most Common Forms: Gusta and Gustan

Because the thing you like is the actual subject of the sentence, the verb gustar almost always matches that thing.

  • If you like a singular thing, use gusta.
    • Me gusta la manzana. (The apple is pleasing to me.)
  • If you like a plural thing, use gustan.
    • Me gustan las manzanas. (The apples are pleasing to me.)
  • If you like an action/verb, use gusta.
    • Me gusta comer. (Eating is pleasing to me.)

The Pronouns (Who is pleased?)

Instead of yo, tú, él, we use Indirect Object Pronouns to show who is receiving the pleasure.

  • Me gusta (I like / It is pleasing to me)
  • Te gusta (You like / It is pleasing to you)
  • Le gusta (He/She/You-formal likes / It is pleasing to him/her/you)
  • Nos gusta (We like / It is pleasing to us)
  • Les gusta (They/You-all like / It is pleasing to them/you all)

Adding Clarification (A mí, a ti, a Juan)

Because le could mean “to him”, “to her”, or “to you (formal)”, we often add a clarification phrase at the beginning of the sentence. We also use these phrases for emphasis.

  • A Juan le gusta el café. (To Juan, the coffee is pleasing -> Juan likes coffee.)
  • A ella le gustan los gatos. (She likes cats.)
  • A mí me gusta leer. (I really like to read.)

Note: You cannot say “Yo me gusta” or “Juan le gusta”. You must use the “A…” phrase.
