How to Pronounce the Spanish R and RR
Practical tips for beginners on how to pronounce the single tapped R and the rolling double RR in Spanish.
How to Pronounce the Spanish R and RR
One of the most intimidating parts of learning Spanish is the letter R.
Many English speakers struggle because the Spanish R sounds very different from the harsh, drawn-out English R (like in the word “car”).
In Spanish, there are two distinct R sounds: the single R and the double RR.
1. The Single R (The “Tapped” R)
The single R in Spanish is usually just a quick tap of your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
The trick for English speakers: Say the word “butter” or “water” quickly. Notice what your tongue does on the double ‘tt’ or ‘t’. It lightly taps the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth. That exact tap is the Spanish single R.
Try saying these words using that quick “tap”:
- pero (but) - sounds like “peddo”
- caro (expensive)
- maría
Note: If a single R is at the very beginning of a word (like rojo), it is pronounced like a rolled RR.
2. The Double RR (The “Rolled” or “Trilled” R)
The double RR requires your tongue to vibrate against the roof of your mouth. This is the one that takes practice if your native language doesn’t have it.
How to do it:
- Place the tip of your tongue in the same spot as the “tap” (just behind your upper front teeth).
- Keep your tongue relaxed (don’t press hard!).
- Push a steady stream of air out of your lungs and over your tongue. The air is what makes your tongue vibrate.
Try rolling your R on these words:
- perro (dog)
- carro (car)
- burro (donkey)
Why it Matters (Pero vs. Perro)
Pronouncing the R correctly isn’t just about sounding nice; it can change the meaning of the word entirely!
-
pero (single tap) = but
-
perro (rolled) = dog
-
caro (single tap) = expensive
-
carro (rolled) = car
Don’t Stress!
If you can’t roll your Rs perfectly yet, don’t worry. Native speakers will still understand you from context. Keep practicing in the shower or the car, and your mouth will eventually get the muscle memory!
